NPRS – Nosocomial Prevalence and Resistance Survey

The prevalence of nosocomial gram-negative pathogens in ICUs and their resistance to 12 antimicrobials from different groups (beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones) are determined.

This study began in 1994. There were 3 participating laboratories on the Phase I: Scientific Center of Surgery (Moscow), State Research Center of Antibiotics (Moscow), Smolensk State Medical Academy (Smolensk). A total of 300 gram-negative nosocomial strains were studied and analyzed. MICs were determined with Etests.

Phase II of the survey was carried out in 1995-1996 in 10 centers: Moscow (2 centers), St-Petersburg (1 center), N-Novgorod (1 center), Krasnodar (1 center), Ekaterinburg (1 center), Kazan (1 center), Novosibirsk (1 center), Krasnoyarsk (1 center). There were 1005 gram-negative nosocomial strains collected. An Information Bulletin and the article in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infection (J Clin Microbiol Infect 1998;4:497-507) were published based on the results obtained.

The on-going Phase III (1997-2000) is carried on in 30 laboratories of different regions of Russia including Moscow (9 centers), St-Petersburg (3 centers), Smolensk, Ryazan, N-Novgorod, Krasnodar (2 centers), Stavropol, Rostov-na-Donu, Kazan (2 centers), ekaterinburg (2 centers), Tomsk, Novosibirsk, Ufa, Omsk, Krasnoyarsk (2 centers), Vladivostok (1 center). There were 2210 strains of gram-negative nosocomial pathogens tested so far.
