I heard this yesterday and was quite saddened by the news. This will be quite a blow to the Russian Microbiology community. Please let us know if there are ways we can help to continue the excellent science he has established in Russia.
Sincerely,
Karen Bush

Dear colleagues and friends of Leonid Stratchounski,
We at BD want to express our deep sadness about the tragic death of Professor Stratchounski who was expected to be at BD in Baltimore the day after his stay in Moscow.
His dream was to establish a center of excellence in Smolensk in order to improve Russian standards. Part of his dream was to build a 'State-of-the-art' institute containing the most modern laboratory that I have ever seen in Russia. I still have the ticket for the trip to Smolensk to be part of the inauguration ceremony. The dream of Leonid regarding the new institute became true. Unfortunately, it was not given to him to open this new institute personally. Roman told me, it would be Leonid's wish that his colleagues go ahead and fulfill his mission. I think the same and I am hopeful that I can still make use of my ticket.
Apart of the modern laboratory, he was able to attract and keep highly talented and motivated people at his institute. Please, keep Leonid's spirit alive and go on with your great contribution to the Russian society.
As Roger Finch was asking in his condolence, we at BD will do our best to give support for programs to improve microbiological practices in Russia
Yours,
Detlef S. Siewert

This is iindeed an untimely death of someone who accomplished by dint of his energy, enthusiasm, charm and intellect a great deal under very difficult and challenging circumstances.
Do you know if a memorial fund or other efforts are being organized in his memory or his familiy's behalf?
Sincerely,
Michael Bennish, MD

We were so sorry to hear of this news, a tragedy for an outstanding individual who cannot be replaced. I extend my condolences to you and you colleagues and hope that you will be able to continue the important work that the institute has been engaged in. Life is so precious, that sometimes we forget that nothing is certain and we can be called away at any time.
With my kindest regards,
Thomas R. Fritsche, M.D., Ph.D.
